Lee

Lee Roy Selmon's story combines football scholarships for his parents and a commitment to the community. In the first place Selmon was raised by Lucious and Jessie Selmon, on the farm close to Eufala located in Oklahoma as the eldest of the nine children they had. The Selmons were also among the three siblings who represented Oklahoma in football. Three of them made All-America. Lucious Jr. Dewey & Lee Roy started for one season in 1973. Lee Roy is the winner of both Outland Awards as well as Lombardi Awards. He was the best lineman in all of the nation. Lee Roy won two championships, and 32-1-1 in his three seasons as the Oklahoma's starting linebacker. In 1975, he received his third scholarship and was recognized as a National Football Foundation scholar-athlete. Selmon earned a degree as a teacher. Lee Roy spent ten hours every week in volunteer work throughout his time at college. He settled down in Tampa after college, was a member of the Buccaneers for a period of nine years, and played three times in the all-pro league. His business career began. In 1988, he worked as an Account Relation Officer at First Florida Bank in Tampa. He was employed by the Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute as well as the Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. He was no surprise that the year 1982 was when the Junior Chamber of Commerce named Lee Roy one of ten outstanding young people across the country. Lee Roy, a 6-2-inch taller and weighing the hefty 256 pounds at college when he was a player, captained his team throughout 1975. In 1993, Roy joined the University of South Florida's sports department as the associate director. In 1988, he was voted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The same year, he also was a part of the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1995, the Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation awarded the Distinguished American Award for 1989 to Lucious Selmon, Jr. Henry Bellmon, the governor of Oklahoma presented it.
